Safety on the Jobsite

Electrical construction presents hazards that require planning, training and constant attention to changing jobsite conditions. From commercial facilities and industrial environments to high-voltage and utility work, safe electrical construction begins with identifying hazards, using appropriate protective equipment and procedures, and maintaining clear communication among everyone involved in the work.

Every project and work environment presents different conditions. Safety requirements should be appropriate to the work being performed, the equipment involved and the requirements of the facility or jobsite.





Pre-Job Planning:
Assess the work area, identify electrical and site hazards, coordinate the work, and make sure workers understand the task before beginning.

Personal Protective Equipment:
Use PPE appropriate to the work and hazards present.

Electrical Hazard Awareness:
Treat electrical systems and conductors as hazardous until their condition has been properly determined.

Lockout/Tagout:
Explain the importance of controlling hazardous energy before equipment is serviced or maintained, without claiming Southwestern's particular LOTO program.

High-Voltage Awareness:
Maintain appropriate clearances and restrict high-voltage work to properly qualified personnel.

Tools & Equipment:
Inspect tools, cords, ladders and equipment before use and remove damaged equipment from service.

Jobsite Conditions:
Keep work areas clear, address trip hazards, protect openings and maintain safe access to electrical equipment.

Overhead & Underground Utilities:
Identify utility hazards before excavation, lifting or working near power lines.

Communication:
Coordinate electrical work with other trades, facility personnel and project supervisors.

Emergency Awareness:
Workers should know site-specific emergency procedures and how to respond when unsafe conditions are discovered.
